Independent Newspapers

Project: Independent Newspapers
Location: Dublin
Architect: Robinson Keefe and Devane
Contractor: John Paul Construction

RKD Architects design approach was to break the building into two parts, the Press Hall and the secondary part of the building.

The Press Hall would be the prominent feature, displaying the large and impressive new printing presses as an industrial sculpture dramatically encased in a simple, clear and transparent space.

The trusses are splayed outwards along the front of the facade. This splay allows the glass to be faceted from 0° at the bottom in 2.5m increments to 17.5° at the top of the 60m long, 18m high Press Hall.

This design helps to eliminate any external reflections from the road.

The hall is glazed on three sides, with the back wall solid and the printing press silhouetted against it.

Architectural Aluminium was responsible for the complete external envelope of the building, which compromised of the Spanwall 1016 panelling to the rear along with the integrated glazing, the glass wall to the printing press and the feature roof.
